The value of memorie

This is interesting text written by a very smart friend from Morrisville, North Carolina. When I read the passage it reminded me the reason that moved me to publish this blog. That reason is very well summarized in the following sentence of the passage below: "By sharing our memories and experiences we will give others growth in knowledge and avoid the repetition of errors”. With nothing else to say, these are the words that I received and now wish to share with you:

For this new school year, I have chosen as an elective the study of the Holocaust in Poland during the time of Hitler. I have studied many interesting things but most of all, the importance of memories. We know what we know about the holocaust because of what the survivors have shared with us despite all the sorrow they might feel when doing so. This way, important history, like this one, will never be forgotten. It is also essential to remember that it is from learning the past that we are able to improve our future. By sharing our memories and experiences we will give others growth in knowledge and avoid the repetition of errors. A very clear example is the story of Viktor Frankl. He has taught us many things from his experience in Auschwitz and ended his book "Man in search for Meaning" with these words that show a beautiful insight to the mystery of man´s freedom : "We have come to know man as he really is. After all, man is that being who invented the gas chambers of Auschwitz; however, he is also that being who entered those gas chambers upright, with the Lord's Prayer or the Shema Yisrael on his lips"
